William Inge's Picnic follows Madge Owens, a beautiful but unfulfilled young woman in a small Kansas town, over a single Labor Day weekend. Her ordinary life is disrupted by the arrival of Hal Carter, a charming, handsome, but aimless drifter who quickly ignites a passionate but complicated romance with Madge. John used the idea of a house framed set to enhance the idea that, "In a small town, everyone sees and hears everything. And, passion can't be walled up for long."
